If you’ve planned a vegetarian barbecue, then the 1 kilogram Shoyu Protein Bloc of seitan is perfect for you. You can mince the seitan to make vegetarian burgers, or use part of the 1 kilogram block to cut cubes and skewer them together with vegetables to make a satay, or you can cut it into strips and make a vegetarian ratatouille.
Bertyn makes its seitan according to traditional methods, which means it does not contain protein isolates, only wheat or spelt flour that has been washed numerous times before it becomes seitan dough. There is an enormous difference between the taste of Bertyn’s seitan and seitan made with protein isolates, while the texture is different too. You will even notice it if you grind the Shoyu Protein Bloc into a healthy and nutritious vegetarian mince.
If you only want to use a bit of you one kilogram block, it’s easy! You can freeze seitan for up to 3 months after opening the packaging. When unopened, the seitan has a shelf life of 6 months in the freezer. Seitan can also be stored in the fridge. See the ‘best before’ date on the packaging. Once opened, Bertyn seitan can be kept for up to 1 week in the fridge.
Pan-fry or grill on both sides for 5 minutes.
Add the sauce and ... ready to serve!
Alternatively, immerse it in its package in boiling water for 5 minutes.
