Tamari Protein Steak is a high-protein plant-based seitan steak that is made of organic spelt. The protein in this steak is from spelt flour and spelt meal, with the high-fibre meal aiding digestion. Spelt is an original grain that is high in protein as well as other nutrients, such as vitamins E and B, folic acid and iron.
What is tamari?
Tamari is a gluten-free soya sauce. While normal soya sauce is made using fermented soya beans and wheat, tamari is a by-product of miso and does not contain any wheat. That’s because miso is nothing more than the moisture released when the soya beans are fermenting.
The addition of wheat makes soya sauce sweeter and milder than tamari. So Tamari Protein Steak has a sharper flavour than Shoyu Protein Steak, which is made from wheat flour and meal and is marinated in soya sauce.
Bertyn’s tamari is made by a Japanese brewer, Yoshio Aoki, a fourth-generation tamari brewer who still uses the same recipe his ancestors used. The soya beans are grown organically and are left to mature for a lengthy period in cedar barrels.
Tamari is used to marinade the seitan. Aside from the Tamari Protein Steak, Bertyn offers three other types of seitan marinated in tamari: Tamari Protein Steak with vitamin D and 550 g and 1,000 g Tamari Protein Blocs.

Fry the Tamari Protein Steak in a pan or grill it
Remove the hot pan from the heat and add the remaining tamari sauce.
