BACK TO SCHOOL

A good school day starts with breakfast

Mornings are usually hectic. Still, breakfast is an important time to get the day off to a good start.

Opt for a combination that keeps you full. Consider, for example:

  • oatmeal with a plant-based beverage, fruit, and nuts;
  • yogurt or a plant-based alternative with granola;
  • whole-grain bread with nut butter;
  • a smoothie with fruit, oatmeal, and a plant-based beverage.

Not a fan of cow’s milk or just looking for a change? The Ecomil plant-based beverages come in flavors such as almond, oat, coconut, cashew, and hazelnut. They’re perfect for cereal, oatmeal, smoothies, or simply on their own in a glass.

Tip for busy mornings: Set out bowls, lunchboxes, and dry ingredients the night before. That saves a few minutes when they matter most.

A lunchbox that actually comes back empty

Eating the same sandwiches every day gets boring fast. A little variety not only makes lunch more appealing but also makes it easier to combine different foods.

For example, you can alternate between:

  • whole-grain bread or wraps;
  • raw vegetables such as carrots, cucumbers, and cherry tomatoes;
  • hummus or another vegetable spread;
  • cheese, eggs, or another source of protein;
  • fresh fruit;
  • unsalted nuts for older children;
  • leftover pasta, rice, or couscous salad.

Do you have some extra pasta, vegetables, or other ingredients left over in the evening? Save them right away for lunch the next day. Meal prep doesn’t have to be complicated at all.

Smart Snacking Between Classes

A cookie now and then is fine, of course, but there are plenty of other options for daily snacks.

Fresh fruit is always a classic. Nuts, dried fruit, a piece of dark chocolate, or homemade energy balls also fit easily in your backpack.

For example, you can make your own balls with dates, nuts, cocoa, and coconut. Just mix, roll, and you’re done. Store them in the fridge, and you’ll have snacks ready for several days.

That way, all you have to do in the morning is grab something from the fridge.

Don’t forget to drink

During a busy school day, drinking water is sometimes simply forgotten. A reusable water bottle in the backpack helps keep water within easy reach at all times.

With a sustainable water bottle like the one from Klean Kanteen , you’ll also avoid single-use packaging every day. Fill it up in the evening or in the morning, and you can take it right along to school, the sports club, or college.

Is plain water not very popular? A slice of lemon, some mint, cucumber, or a few pieces of fruit can easily add a little extra flavor to water.

From vacation mode to school routine

It’s not just food that plays a role in the transition to the new school year. After weeks without an alarm clock, getting up early again can take some getting used to.

So try to gradually reestablish a routine a few days before the first day of school. Go to bed at roughly the same time every night and try to get up at about the same time in the morning.

Preparing things the night before also helps:

pack the lunchbox, fill the water bottle, pack the backpack, and pick out clothes.

Less searching in the morning means a calmer start for everyone.

For college students, too: back to the books

Of course, “back to school” doesn’t stop at the school gate. For college students, September means lectures again, long days of classes, and—before long—the first assignments and exams.

A set routine helps you balance studying and relaxation. Schedule study sessions, make sure to take enough breaks, and try not to sit at your laptop for hours on end.

Here, too, the basics are important: a varied diet, staying hydrated, exercising, and getting enough sleep.

Having a good supply of breakfast items, healthy snacks, and quick meals in your dorm or student room can also prevent you from always choosing the easiest option on busy days.
