Matcha: The Green Gold of Japan
Matcha has been an integral part of Japanese tea culture for centuries, but in recent years it has been conquering the rest of the world - from trendy coffee bars to health blogs. What makes this intensely green powder so special? And why should you incorporate it into your daily routine?
What is matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground powder made from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike regular green tea, where you let the leaves steep and then remove them, with matcha you drink the whole leaf. That means: more antioxidants, more nutrients, more energy.
The benefits of matcha
1. Packed with antioxidants (EGCG)
Matcha contains up to 137 times more EGCG (a powerful antioxidant) than regular green tea. These substances help protect cells from free radical damage.
2. Quiet energy boost
Matcha contains caffeine, but in combination with L-theanine - an amino acid that promotes relaxation without making you sleepy. Result? Long-lasting, calmer alertness, without the "crash" of coffee.
3. Supports fat burning and metabolism
Several studies suggest that matcha may help increase fat burning during exercise, and boost metabolism.
4. Detoxifying effect
Because matcha consists of young, shade-grown leaves, it is rich in chlorophyll - a natural pigment that helps detoxify the body.
5. Enhances concentration and memory
Thanks to its unique combination of caffeine and L-theanine, matcha can improve your focus, memory and mental clarity.
How to use matcha.
Matcha is versatile and easy to use:
-
Traditional: whisk 1 teaspoon of matcha powder with hot water (not boiling!) to make a frothy tea.
-
Matcha latte: mix with (vegetable) milk for a creamy, healthy drink.
-
In smoothies: add for extra energy and nutrients.
-
In recipes: use matcha in pancakes, desserts or energy balls for an original twist.
What to look out for when choosing?
-
Ceremonial matcha (for pure tea): mild flavor, bright green, high quality
-
Culinary matcha (for cooking/baking): slightly bitter, ideal for recipes
-
Preferably choose organic matcha from Japan for maximum purity
Make a truly traditional matcha in 5 steps
Supplies:
-
Matcha powder (ceremonial grade, preferably organic and Japanese)
-
Chawan: traditional matcha bowl
-
Chasen: bamboo whisk
-
Chashaku: bamboo spoon (optional)
-
Hot water: ± 70-80°C (not boiling!)
Step 1: Heat your bowl
Pour some hot water into the chawan to warm it up. Let stand for a moment, pour away and dry. This helps to whisk the matcha well without lumps.
Step 2: Strain the matcha.
Use about 1 to 2 grams of matcha (± 1/2 to 1 teaspoon or 2 chashaku scoops). Strain the powder over the bowl to avoid lumps. This will give you an airy, smooth matcha.
Step 3: Add water.
Add about 60-70 ml of hot water (70-80°C). Too hot water makes the matcha bitter. If necessary, use a kettle with temperature control, or let boiled water cool for 5-10 minutes.
Step 4: Whisk with the chasen
Whisk firmly with a "W" motion with the bamboo whisk until a nice, light layer of foam forms. This takes about 15-30 seconds. Do not whisk in circles - the W motion helps to introduce air and create foam.
Step 5: Enjoy in silence
Drink the matcha immediately after preparing it, preferably in silence. Traditionally, you drink it in 3 to 4 small sips. Take your time - it is a moment of connection with yourself.
