An elegant and refined chawan glazed with ash and minimal lustre.
Haigara is a ceremonial matcha bowl with a traditional look for people who love rustic ceramics. There is very little lustre to the bowl – it is more matt than anything – and does not have the typical lustrous finish of other ceramic bowls. The Haigara is glazed with wood ash in order to give certain spots a refined look and design. The Haigara chawan is named for this exceptional process; In Japanese haigara means ‘to ash’, with the wood ash glaze giving the chawan its matt and roughish texture.
The dark-green colour of the matcha bowl was inspired by the bright green of matcha tea.
Chawan is the Japanese name for a tea bowl that it is used to prepare matcha. It's much more than just a beautiful bowl, much attention is paid to its dimensions, the inside, the base and the rim when making a chawan. These elements are all important for preparing matcha and for the experience of drinking the tea.
Made in Japan, the Haigara chawan has a refined and simple look that evokes the Japanese concept of wabi, referring to ‘humbleness in simplicity’.
Use | Not dishwasher safe – not microwaveable. Clean with (warm) water without soap, so that any leftover soap does not affect the taste of the matcha. |
