✔ Japanese Oribe ware
✔ Made using the principle of 'wabi-sabi'
✔ Lustrous black glaze
This ceremonial matcha bowl is named for FTenmokus, a 16th century Japanese tea master and inventor. Tenmoku ware is immediately recognisable because of its coloured glazing, with a typical Tenmoku glaze being a lustrous dark green. Tenmoku ware that is completely covered in black glaze is called Tenmokus.
Lovers of Japanese teaware consider tenmoku ware to be a classic example of Japanese aesthetics. It embodies the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi, which means ‘perfect imperfection’. It refers to the idea that there is inherent beauty in simplicity and asymmetry as well as the fact that natural imperfection can also be reflected in a created object, like this chawan. The rim of the matcha bowl is neither straight nor delineated, but instead rises and falls – a visual representation of the hilly Japanese landscape.
Tenmoku ware is much-loved, not just as a visual reminder of wabi-sabi but also because it looks good with foodstuffs. The black glaze of this chawan highlights the deep green colour of the matcha more than any other chawan can, a visually appealing contrast that turns drinking matcha from this bowl into an exceptional experience, each and every time.
Chawan is the Japanese name for a tea bowl that it is used to prepare matcha. It’s not just a beautiful bowl, and much attention is paid to dimensions, the inside, the base and the rim when making a chawan. These elements are all important for preparing matcha and for the experience of drinking the tea.
Made in Japan, the Tenmuk chawan makes drinking matcha a unique experience. As a decorative element in your kitchen this ceremonial bowl is a daily reminder of the beauty of natural imperfections, of wabi-sabi.
Use | Not dishwasher safe – not microwaveable. Clean with (warm) water without soap, so that any leftover soap does not affect the taste of the matcha. |
