SPF 15 sun milk for darker skin types and daily use

Sun milk with a factor SPF 15 is suitable for darker skin types, for those who are already tanned, or for daily use as a day cream during the colder months of the year. Because even in autumn and winter that skin is exposed to sunlight and the skin needs sufficient protection.

What is SPF 15 or factor 15?

SPF stands for ‘Sun Protection Factor’ and indicates the average time period after which the skin will burn, without the protection of sunscreen or sun spray.

The number behind SPF was determined through specific tests. A group of people were exposed to a light spectrum that is the equivalent of midday sunshine in a controlled environment (inside). One part of this group used a sunscreen, the other part did not. The amount of ‘light exposure’ that caused red skin in the protected group was subsequently divided by the amount of light that caused redness in the non-protected group. The result was a number which indicates UVB light and this number can be anywhere between 1 and 50, or even higher.

An SPF factor of 15, for example, will ensure that your skin, the skin that would turn red after about 10 minutes without any sun protection, only starts turning red after 150 minutes with sun protection. So, with an SPF 15 you can stay in the sun up to 15 times longer.

Scientific research has shown that from SPF 15 or factor 15 the skin is protected against the damage that sunrays can create.

Organic (biological) sun cream with natural mineral filters against UVA and UVB rays

The SPF 15 Sun Milk Face & Body from Biosolis protects your skin in a natural way. No chemical filters, but mineral filters that respect the coral reefs, the marine ecosystem and our health.

In this sun cream 2 mineral filters are used: zinc oxide and titanium oxide. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are good for sensitive skin types. They lay on the surface of the skin and are not deeply absorbed, reducing the chances of an allergic reaction. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are natural filters that reflect sunlight. A chemical filter works a bit differently: chemical filters penetrate the skin and then neutralise the sunrays there with a chemical reaction.

This sun cream protects the skin against UVB and UVA rays

  • UVA rays penetrate through to the deepest skin layers and therefore may cause wrinkles, darker spots and skin cancer. UVA rays can pass through glass (such as car windows).
  • UVB rays burn the upper layer of the skin. They are often the cause of sunburn when exposed to sunlight unprotected. UVB rays do not pass through glass.
  • It is important to use a sun cream or sun spray that offers protections against both UVA and UVB rays, predominantly UVA rays, because 95% of sunlight is UVA rays.

Sun cream protects your skin only when used often enough

The AAD (American Academy of Dermatology) recommends to apply the amount of sunscreen needed to fill a shot glass (approximately) across the entire body. This is also the same as a well-filled palm.

Moreover, make sure to apply enough sunscreen to the areas of the body which are most exposed to the sun, such as your shoulders, your ears, chest and feet.

According to the AAD, we have the tendency to use too little sun cream on our faces – because we want to spread out sunscreen too much to avoid having white residue on our skin or to apply make-up. The face, therefore, is often not sufficiently protected. Try to ensure that a minimum of 1 teaspoon of sunscreen is applied to the face.

Remember to repeatedly re-apply sunscreen

For most sun care products, it is preferable to apply your sunscreen anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes before going outside and into the sun. This gives your skin enough time to absorb and process the ingredients so that you are protected against the damaging UVA and UVB rays.

The sun care products from Biosolis distinguish themselves by immediately protecting the skin right after applying.

Re-apply every two hours, after swimming and also after sweating. Don’t forget that daylight means sunlight. Even in the autumn and the winter your skin is exposed to sunrays. Some light protection can prevent early aging and premature wrinkles.

Sunscreen is not waterproof, but water resistant

Whether you are swimming or exercising rigorously in the sun, both water and sweat mix with the sun cream on your skin and weaken its protection. Sun cream is, therefore, never water proof even though this is often stated on the labels of sun care products. Waterproof in this context refers to the fact that the sun tan lotion contains petrochemicals and closes off the pores of your skin.

Water resistant is used to indicate how long the sun cream remains on wet skin, after how much time the sun cream should be re-applied. This is on average between 40 and 80 minutes.

Sunscreen has a limited shelf-life

A sunscreen loses its strength as time goes by. On most sun care products, the shelf life is mentioned. It does you well to remember to check the ‘expiration date’, as to ensure that your skin is optimally protected. If you’re using sunscreen the whole year-round, then it should not be an issue to finish the tube before it has reached its expiration date.
