Pu-erh is the name of a small Chinese village in the province of Yunnan, located in Southern China. It was there that 2000 years ago one of the most important tea trade routes was established. Pu-erh tea has since been cultivated and transported to other Chinese cities so the imperial family and each citizen of China could reap the health benefits of this tea.
Pu-erh tea is one of the 5 main types of tea. It differs from white, green, black and oolong tea due to the differences in the fermentation processes of the tealeaves. After the tealeaves have been picked they are regularly moistened during a period of 60 days and, turned over every 10 days. The moist environment allows for bacteria and yeast to ferment the leaves. As a result, pu-erh tea becomes a red coloured tea with a delicious earthy taste.
Numi was the first to create pu-erh tea in the form of teabags. It was also the first to add to the pu-erh tea to make the taste more appealing to a wider public. In this tea, Numi has added organic cacao and vanilla to dim the earthy pu-erh taste. Therefore, Numi’s Chocolate Pu-erh tea tastes like a delicious combination of chocolate and the traditional pu-erh tea taste.
In China, pu-erh tea has been consumed for centuries. It is a fermented tea and much like other fermented food products (kimchi, kombucha, kefir, sauerkraut) pu-erh supposedly has a beneficial effect on digestion.
Numi pu-erh tea is organic and Fair Trade. For those who aren't big chocolate lovers, we suggest Numi's Emperor's Pu-Erh tea.

Pu-erh tea is a good alternative for coffee, just as black tea is. The tea is strong enough and can be made weaker by adding milk to it, but it can just as well be consumed without milk.
