Mānuka honey is a rare, coveted honey that is unique to New Zealand, and renowned for its extraordinary healing properties. Mānuka honey sets itself apart from any other honey in the world.

True Mānuka is a dark, rich and lightly flavored "monofloral" honey - meaning it comes from a single flower. The bees forage from the native Mānuka tree (leptospermum scoparium) during the small flowering period - just a few weeks in the summer.
To capture the nectar flow, beehives must be placed in remote Mānuka areas at just the right time and conditions must be just right. Strong winds blow the flowers off the plants, while rain keeps the bees from leaving the hives.

As with wine, no two honey harvests are the same from year to year, and this is reflected in the MG rating of the honey, which indicates how many beneficial properties that year's honey harvest contains. The nectar of the Mānuka tree results in the world's most coveted monofloral honey that has impressively potent antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory health properties.

MGO (Methylglyoxal) is formed in the honey of Mānuka nectar. As the honey matures, the MGO content may increase. This requires expert knowledge and careful storage, along with accurate testing to ensure the potency, quality and purity of the honey. 

The number on the front of each jar of TranzAlpine Mānuka honey - the MG rating - indicates the strength of the honey's antimicrobial activity. The higher the rating, the
higher the properties mentioned above.
