A delicacy is a special kind of food that is usually surrounded by some exclusivity. They are often culturally bound. For example, eating raw herring is very popular in the Netherlands, but very unusual in other countries. In Thailand, deep-fried scorpions and turtle meat are delicacies. In Japan, fugu is popular, which is prepared from the highly poisonous puffer fish. Many delicacies are not so much appreciated for their taste, but for their exclusivity. Well-known examples are shark fin soup, turtle soup and caviar.
