The Arriba Nacional cocoa bean in this vegan chocolate bar is a valuable symbol of quality and tradition in Ecuador.
According to local legends, the name was created in the middle of the 18th century. Europeans who arrived in Ecuador, looking for the best cocoa for chocolate, spoke to the local people in the port and asked ‘Where can we find this great, prized cocoa from Ecuador?’ The answer was ‘arriba… rio arriba’, which translates to ‘up the river’. Los Rios, the birthplace of this cocoa bean, has rich soil due the many rivers flowing through the region who meet to form the Guayas River.
The cocoa bean has existed for more than 5000 years, but is still only produced in limited quantity.
The image on the packaging shows how an Ecuadorian cocoa farmer plucks the ‘cabossa’, the cocoa fruit in which the loved Arriba Nacional cocoa can be found.
