Gianduja from Aruntam is a high quality vegan chocolate with hazelnut flavour. The recipe for this chocolate is based on the traditional Italian candy Gianduiotto, a scrumptious combination of 3 pure ingredients: cocoa, hazelnut paste and sugar.

For Gianduja, Aruntam chose the Arriba Nacional cocoa from the Ecuadorian providence of Los Rios. This cocoa has been recognized for decades as the purest raw basic ingredient to make chocolate with. It is a cocoa that speaks to all our senses.

The Story Behind the Name “Gianduja” and the Packaging of this Vegan Chocolate

Gianduja is one of the masked theatre personas from the Italian comedy dell’art. He represents Turin, the capital of Piedmont.

According to the legend, Gianduja shared the first chocolates wrapped in tin foil during carnival in 1856. The chocolate candies, as a result, received their name “Gianduiotti”. “Gianduiotti” also means “stump” and refers to the form of the candies – a little boat on its head – and the hat of Gianduja.

The typical Piedmont chocolate with hazelnuts originate from Napoleon’s time, when he banned the import of goods from British colonies, including cocoa from South America. An Italian chocolate maker was then forced to substitute a part of his cocoa and did so with a hazelnut paste, made of hazelnuts from Piedmont.
