Rrraw's raw cocoa beans: a healthy snack and pure flavour sensation
Cocoa is a super food. It is packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, flavonoids and theobromine—all chemicals that make for a happy body. It is therefore certainly a good idea to eat some raw chocolate every day.
Thanks to the natural production process, which doesn't involve roasting or boiling, the raw cocoa beans from Rrraw retain all their aromatics and nutritional benefits. After being harvested, the cocoa beans are fermented together with their pulp. After that, they are washed and then dried in the Peruvian sun.
How should I eat raw cocoa beans?
You can eat raw cocoa beans just as they are. You might have to get used to the pure flavour of the cocoa first. It is entirely different from (regular) chocolate. It's a new flavour experience all together: less sweet, slightly bitter, drier, yet crunchy. Do you miss the sweetness? If so, you could dip the raw cocoa beans in some honey.
How many cocoa beans can you eat per day? Rrraw recommends a maximum of 5 to 10 beans for an adult and 2 to 5 cocoa beans for a child.
If you peel a cocoa bean, the bean falls apart into cocoa nibs. You can add these to a smoothie, or sprinkle them over your muesli or breakfast cereal. Mix them with some nuts and fruits and you have a nutritious, healthy snack.
What is the difference between raw cocoa and regular chocolate?
Cocoa is a raw material and the basic ingredient for making chocolate. Raw cocoa beans contain many healthy nutrients. When making chocolate as we know it, these nutrients are largely lost when the cocoa beans are roasted.
Additionally, a lot of sugars and fats are added to regular chocolate, which doesn't do the flavour any justice and makes the cocoa beans lose their healthy qualities. It is therefore certainly a good idea to give raw cocoa beans a try sometime. The flavour is quite different from regular chocolate. It's drier, slightly bitter, yet crunchy.
