Teixidors is a Spanish weaving mill with a special social purpose

Teixidors is a Spanish weaving mill that makes plaids, bedspreads, pillowcases... located near Barcelona. For more than twenty years, this company has provided integration and financial independence for people with disabilities. In 1983, Joan Ruíz and Martha Ribas founded Teixidors to provide a place for people who otherwise would not find their place in society.

Through her work in psychiatry as a social worker, Martha discovered that weaving is used as therapy in Scandinavia for people with social or mental disabilities. The manual work, the focus on minute details, the repetition of the same action and the sense of belonging somewhere and being useful were said to be healing. Hence the choice of a weaving mill as a social workshop.

At Teixidors, this is confirmed daily:

I know it would be difficult for me to work anywhere else. Here I feel calm and part of the group, says Alfonso, who has worked at Teixidors for more than 30 years

Everyone is trained as a weaver with time and attention

Since its inception, Teixidors has grown tremendously. The weaving mill started with 5 homemade looms and now has 22 in the workshop. Teixidors truly invests in its staff. Training to become a weaver takes an average of 3 years. Everyone in the workshop - except the "trainers" Jaume and his assistant and the person who does quality control - has a mental disability. From them, weaving requires enormous concentration. But each weaver is very proud of his craft. And rightly so, because weaving is extremely difficult to (learn). The work has to be done in a very controlled way, so that the weavings do not show differences anywhere.

The largest loom at Teixidors is 3 meters wide and is used to make the Thor bedspread and Thor rug. Each weaver learns each step of the weaving process to develop more skills and have variety when desired.

The Teixidors weaving you buy is unique and handmade

By buying Teixidors weavings, you support the social work done by the weaving company. Moreover, you are buying unique textiles each time; each weaving is handmade from start to finish and is by definition the only one in the world each time.
