Do you know why wool is becoming more popular? And why wool products are worth the extra cost? We’ve done our research. Read here why Amanvida always chooses ecological wool over synthetic fabrics.

1. Wool is durable

Each year the newly shaven sheep grow a new woollen coat. As a natural, renewable material, wool is also 100% recyclable. And with the woollen home textiles from Teixidors, even vegans can enjoy their purchase with peace of mind; the sheep from the Macomerinos are exceptionally well cared for and daily graze, in full freedom, whilst breathing in the fresh air of the French Alps.

2. Wool breathes

[caption id="attachment_485" align="alignleft" width="300"]Macomerinos sheep, the wool supplier of Teixidors The sheep’s woollen coat regulates the animal’s body temperature. In the winter it preserves heat, in the summer it cools. This also happens with a wool sweater or blanket. You can use it all year-round.[/caption]

You don’t need to wash wool. Because the fibres in wool ‘ventilate’ naturally, the humidity and temperature of the material is perfectly regulated. (Scent-forming) bacteria also cannot grow here. It is sufficient to hang your woollen clothing outside in the fresh air so that the material’s natural freshness can be restored. Staining is also rare, but more about this in the 5th reason…

3. Wool insulates

[caption id="attachment_486" align="alignright" width="300"]Thor bedding by Teixidors - made of organic wool Even in winter it is sufficient for many to sleep under a sheet and light woollen bedspread. Wool insulates and retains the heat underneath.[/caption]

Wool fibres are curled and keep air trapped within these curls. The trapped air is responsive to body temperature and will maintain this temperature. This is how a woollen blanket works, ensuring that you are never cold or too warm. Therefore, wool is not bound to a particular season; you can enjoy it throughout the whole year. A woollen blanket is warm during the winter, cool in the summer.

4. Wool keeps it shape

[caption id="attachment_487" align="alignleft" width="300"]Nebula plaid by Teixidors - made of 50% organic wool + 50% organic cashmere The Nebula blanket or shawl is made up of 50% wool and 50% cashmere. The presence of cashmere in this woven fabric makes it even lighter than those made in its entirety from ‘regular’ wool.[/caption]

In contrast to synthetic blankets, a woollen blanket keeps it shape. While it may sound contradictory, this is due the elasticity of the wool fibres. These fibres are so elastic they prevent the sweater or blanket from becoming baggy or out-of-shape. This is apparent because you rarely see creased or wrinkled wool clothing and blankets.

5. Wool is water and dirt repellent

[caption id="attachment_488" align="alignright" width="300"]Sisteron cushion cover by Teixidors Worried about staining wool? Wool contains wool grease which repels water and dirt. On wool, liquids form droplets which cannot penetrate the fabric. If you quickly dab (don’t rub) the stains will disappear![/caption]

Wool contains lanoline (wool wax or grease). This grease is not only water repellent, it also withstands any ‘dirt’. You don’t have to panic when you spill your cup of coffee on your woollen sweater. To be absolutely sure, we tested this at the Amanvida offices. One by one, we poured coffee over our samples from Teixidors. After a couple of minutes we started dabbing (rubbing is not recommended on wool). The result? Not a single stain. Liquids on wool roll together to form droplets and do not penetrate the material.

6. Wool is long-lasting

A woollen shawl, bedspread, rug can be passed on from generation to generation. Also when pulling on a woollen blanket, for example, nothing happens. Wool is strong because of the resilient wool fibres and because of the lack of washing required. It is sufficient to simply air out your woollen items.
