Propolis is a sticky, waxy substance that bees make from resin extracted from tree buds (mainly poplar, birch, elder, willow, lime and conifers).
The bees process this resin with their salivary enzymes and mix it with beeswax and pollen to form a golden brown to red brown substance, propolis.
Propolis is hard and brittle at cold temperatures, softens above 30°C and melts around 60°C - 70°C. Propolis is Greek and means suburb, which indeed indicates a protective barrier.
The bees use propolis to close cracks and holes in the beehive, strengthen the combs (cell compartments of the larvae) and keep them germ-free, ensure a constant optimal temperature and protect the bee colony against invading germs, insects and foreign substances.
Propolis already appeared at the time of the Egyptians, who used it to embalm the deceased.
Incas knew propolis mainly for its soothing effect on the respiratory tract.
The Greek Aristotle mainly used it to support the healing capacity of the skin.
