Siberian pine nuts: The "Pearls of the Taiga"
Siberian pine nuts - the 'nuts' from Siberian pine trees - come from the Taiga, with its endless forests, pure air and crystal-clear mountain streams. Harvested in the wild, these pine nuts are free from (human) interference, which produces a superior natural product, with immense vitality. Just like the Russian peasants themselves have been using the cedar nuts for centuries.
Cedar nuts or pine nuts?
Even though the seeds actually come from the Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica), which is closely related to the Alpine pine, the term cedar nuts is preferred in Siberia. In older editions of the well-known Anastasia books (or The Buzzing Cedars of Russia) the Russian word for the tree, 'kedr', was translated as cedar, but biologists have discovered that it was actually Pinus Sibirica. So the 'kedr' is actually a pine.
Are pine nuts healthy?
Pine nuts are very nutritious thanks to their fats (about 90% unsaturated fatty acids, pinol and linolenic acids) and proteins (high percentage of essential amino acids). Siberian pine nuts are rich in iron, magnesium and trace elements such as manganese, copper, zinc and cobalt, as well as vitamins (especially the E and B groups). They contain significant amounts of phospholipids (lecithin), which improve the absorption of fatty acids and fat-soluble vitamins.
Pine nuts from Taiga Naturkost are very versatile
Pine nuts are ideal as a snack, for garnishing salads, fruit dishes, ice cream and pastries, and can be used in muesli and pesto. They taste even more intense when lightly toasted and also add a unique touch to vegetable and rice dishes.
